“They fuck you up, your mum and dad,” so begins Philip Larkin’s oft-quoted poem This Be The Verse.

True, true. But they also buck you up, your mom and dad, as Jeff Chappelle so candidly put it in an email about his parents:

“I try real hard not to blame my folks for anything because I always felt privileged compared to lots of families I know. Never wanted for stuff. My parents never missed a game, event, performance, period. Ultra-supportive. Provided me with a good work ethic, desire to achieve (I might’ve blown that one), get an education. They are really good people who broke the patterns in their respective families and broke out of the lower economic class to the ranks of middle class. I admire them. They’re positive folks. They are not perfect, believe me. But I hope I can embody the good parts and transcend or grapple with the others. Geez, that is some hokey shit!”

No, Jeff, that’s not hokey shit at all.
